What does plagiarism look like?
Copying and pasting from the internet; using someone else's writing but switching words or how the sentence is constructed; using a unique idea or phrase without indicating where you got it from...it's all plagiarism.
We know the internet makes it easy to plagiarize, but did you know it's easy for your teachers to find out your work isn't your own? Teachers can do a GoogleSearch or use a plagarism "catcher" like TurnItIn or PaperRater.
The consequences for plagiarism at East were proposed by students, reviewed and updated by Assistant Principals, and are pretty tough. These offenses are cumulative, and stay with students as they move through grade levels.
Here's what you need to do to avoid plagiarism...
Be good to your sources
- uphold the integrity of our community by behaving honestly and not misrepresenting our knowledge, skills, work or effort in academics.
- strive to represent our school with honor at all times.
- act upon transgressions and uphold the ideals that the code encompasses to the best of our abilities.

- Paraphrase. Put what you read into your own words. You still need to cite where the idea came from, however.
- "USE QUOTATION MARKS." If you can't resist copying and pasting or what the author wrote is so memorable or important that you must use the exact words, don't forget to use quotation marks and to cite where the quote came from.
- Although this doesn't help avoid plagiarism, make sure you include a bibliography or works cited page so your reader knows what resources were used and where they came from.
- CHCCS recommends NoodleTools. This online citation helper will allow you to manage citations, bibliographies, research notecards, and outlines, and to be able to share them with your classmates and teachers.
- GOOGLE DOCS can also create a bibliography/works cited page - go to Tools - Citations. Make sure you change the format to whichever citation system you are using (MLA or APA).
